Postcard from Sardinia

Mar 07, 18 Postcard from Sardinia

I landed in Sardinia last night and was charmed by the dramatic seaside before we even landed. I know very little about this island other then it’s Italian and cannonau is the main variety cultivated here. I’m here visiting as part of the Sardinia Beyond the Sea initiative sponsored by Sardinian producers and the tourist office.

What I have discovered is white cannonau- a blanc de noir, if you will. Produced by the co-op Cantina Oliena (we’re visiting their vineyards tomorrow so more on them later) it was a great way to start the morning.

The Domina Lunae gets its name from ancient female bones that were found in the region of the vineyards and alludes to the connection between women and the moon. The wine is classified as an IGT “Isola di Nuraghi” which near the town of Oliena.

It’s a fresh and light wine with just the right balance of acidity and fruit flavours. Very drinkable and a nice surprise! I can’t wait to see the vines tomorrow.
