Last week I was in Porto, Portugal for the annual wine show Essencia do Vinho put on by the eponymous magazine, one of the 2 major wine magazines of Portugal. There are over 3000 wines and more then 350 producers on show. The show is for trade during the day and consumers at night. As you can imagine, it does get crowded. They estimate that over 20,000 people attend the show held in the ornate Palacio do Bolsa. While I was wondering around, I met some great producers and they are the focus of this weeks podcast. The first producer Quanta Terra. We had one of their table wines at lunch and later at the fair, I met up with their assistant wine maker, Pedro Guedes on the floor of the show where he was pouring their sparkling wine. Sparkling wine from the Douro? Yes, indeed. And Pedro tells me how Quanta Terra came to be in the bastion of port wine production. Portugal is famous for it’s port and one of my favourites is tawny port. My eye was caught by the iconic labels of Ramos Pinto. Ana Rosas, wine maker and part of the family, tells me why she loves making tawny port. And finally, over a long lunch, I chatted with Carlos Campolargo, wine producer from the lesser known region, Barreida. Although the region is knows for it’s sparkling, Carlos believes blends are the way forward. 2012 sure is shaping up to be the year to be in London. So, we’ve got the Olympics, the Para-Olympics, the Queen’s Jubilee etc.  But what made it even more special, for me, was this was the year that the Primum Familiae Vini came to town. The PFV picks an international capital city once a year to play host to them. Now this may not sound like a big deal but the PFV also bring their wines with them. And now it gets interesting. What is the PFV you may be asking? They are a group of the leading wine families in the world. By world, I mean Europe and by leading, I mean, the creme de la creme. Marchese Antinori, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Joseph Drouhin, Egon Muller Scharzhof, Hugel & Fils, Champagne Pol Roger, Perrin & Fils, the Symington Family Estates, Tenuta San Guido, Miguel Torres and Vega Sicilia. Their charter states that they can have a maximum of  12 members but currently there are only 11 members of the group. PFV was established in 1992 and is by invitation only. While PVF might seem to be a bunch of old houses clubbing together, the real goal of the group is “a passion for the pursuit of excellence”. Started by Robert Drouhin and Miguel Torres when they were chatting and walking around a vineyard, they realized they had many of the same goals both in traditional winemaking values and business concerns.  It has since grown into a collective where they can share their knowledge and expertise as well as help each other out in the marketplace. While they are here to show their wines to the press and public, they also hold several tastings as well as a gala dinner and auction to raise funds for various local charities. Sandeman’s 20 yr old Tawny port recently won the International Wine and Spirits Competition’s  best port in the world for 2011. The annual competition picks the best wines in the world in various categories every year. Sandeman was established in 1790 by Scotsman George Sandeman, who founded his port and sherry trading company in Tom’s Coffee House, in the City of London. Coincidentally, The Crypt at Ely’s Place where the Sandeman dinner I attended was held, is but a stone’s throw away from the site of the original Tom’s. The Crypt is over 800 yrs old and was the site of  a 5 day wedding banquet for Henry the VIII, although there was some disagreement around the dinner table as to which wife it was, either  Anne Boleyn or Catherina of Aragon, the mystery was not solved over copious glasses of port. Sandeman became part of the huge Portuguese wine conglomerate Sogrape in the 1970’s but a member of the family is still head of the house to this day.
