Postcard from India – Big Banyan Chenin Blanc
Right before I left Goa I was looking for someplace to eat off the beach and stumbled across a restaurant called La La Land not far from Neptune Point – how could I resist? Plus it was a very nice set up with a lovely courtyard and a reasonable menu.
I was feeling adventurous so I ordered hummous and a glass of Chenin Blanc. Up to this point, I hadn’t heard of Big Banyan but that’s what this trip is all about, innit.
The waiter brought out the bottle and opened it at the table so I knew it was a fresh bottle and it was ice cold! Always a plus, especially in the heat of Goa.
First impressions – It was quite yellow in colour which I was not exactly expecting but I gave it a swirl and a sniff. Not especially aromatic but there was definite notes of oak (oak chips possibly?) and a slight chemical smell, it wasn’t prominent but there was something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. As for the taste, it was pleasingly dry, ripe peach and apricot flavours, medium bodied.
In any case, it was good with the hummous and really isn’t that what it’s all about?
