I caught up with Beltran via Skype recently to chat about the ongoing 80th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Sherry Council and the upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations for the designation of the Manzanilla DO (Denominacion Origen). Beltran also gave me some tips on how to best serve sherry and some great food and sherry matchings. The Feria de Jerez is coming up as well and there will be lots of sherry sampling and drinking going on as well as flamenco dancing and generally having a good time! I’ve started podcasting again and my first new podcast is with my friend and Champagne expert, Caroline Henry. Caroline has been living in the region for the past 3 years in Hautvillers.  In that time she has become aware of the sustainable, organic and biodynamic movement in the region. So much so, that she is now writing a book about that subject. Here she has taken the time to explain why she decided to write “Terroir Champagne, The Luxury of Sustainable, Organic and Biodynamic Cuvees” and what it means to produce environmentally friendly champagne. Recently the “Queen of Australian Viognier”, Louisa Rose, was in town as part of a large contingent of Australian winemakers to hit our shores. Louisa is the Chief Winemaker of the Barossa Valley’s Yalumba Wines and has been deeply involved with the production of their viognier. She’s started out as a cellar rat 20 years ago and in 2006 was made Chief Winemaker. I met Louisa at a small tasting and luncheon at 2850 Wine Workshop and Kitchen  here in London which featured Yalumba’s viogniers and shiraz viognier blends. I first met Australian winemaker Neil McGuigan of McGuigan Wines a few years ago when the winery first did the “Vines in the City” event in London. I thought it was a great way to get consumers literally closer to the vines without the hassle of having to actually travel to a vineyard. Neil and Brian McGuigan were back on this side of the world recently, this time to launch some new wines and also to introduce their “Vines in the City” to the good people of Dublin. Having attended the opening, I can say it was a smashing success, sometimes we in the wine trade take for granted the fact that we can visit vineyards and talk to winemakers on a regular basis. It was great to hear what consumers had to say about the whole experience, in general I’d say it made them very enthusiastic to learn more about wine. Before they opened the gates, I sat down with Neil to find out more about the new wines they are launching in the UK and why they brought it to Dublin. Last week I was in Porto, Portugal for the annual wine show Essencia do Vinho put on by the eponymous magazine, one of the 2 major wine magazines of Portugal. There are over 3000 wines and more then 350 producers on show. The show is for trade during the day and consumers at night. As you can imagine, it does get crowded. They estimate that over 20,000 people attend the show held in the ornate Palacio do Bolsa. While I was wondering around, I met some great producers and they are the focus of this weeks podcast. The first producer Quanta Terra. We had one of their table wines at lunch and later at the fair, I met up with their assistant wine maker, Pedro Guedes on the floor of the show where he was pouring their sparkling wine. Sparkling wine from the Douro? Yes, indeed. And Pedro tells me how Quanta Terra came to be in the bastion of port wine production. Portugal is famous for it’s port and one of my favourites is tawny port. My eye was caught by the iconic labels of Ramos Pinto. Ana Rosas, wine maker and part of the family, tells me why she loves making tawny port. And finally, over a long lunch, I chatted with Carlos Campolargo, wine producer from the lesser known region, Barreida. Although the region is knows for it’s sparkling, Carlos believes blends are the way forward.
